The food drive is to benefit Friends for Life Animal Rescue (www.azfriends.org), a volunteer run, no-kill animal shelter in Gilbert and also Project Humane (www.projecthumane.org),
an NPO that provides temporary shelter for pets whose people have had to go into a shelter themselves, either a homeless or domestic violence shelter. They also provide temporary housing for pets whose people have been deployed in the military.
More than 100,000 dogs and cats in the valley have lost their homes already this year. Donations are down while expenses for the shelters increase. Obviously food is an enormous expense for shelters so we're asking the community to please help these organizations care for these animals in crisis.
People may donate cat or dog food, either bagged or canned and bring it to our location: Gilbert Dogs 24/7, 2285 E. Baseline Rd., Gilbert, 85234. We will give a free 1/2 day of dog daycare to anyone making a donation of 10 lbs. of food and a free day of dog daycare to anyone who donates 20 lbs. of food. The food drive runs now through Jan. 3, 2010. Food will be delivered weekly so Friends for Life and Project Humane can use it immediately.
